Mealworms, scientifically known as Tenebrio molitor, are among the most commonly used live foods for various pets, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish. They are the larvae of the darkling beetle and are relatively easy to raise, making them a convenient and cost-effective option for pet owners.

One of the key advantages of mealworms is their high nutritional value. They are rich in protein, essential fats, and nutrients, making them an excellent source of sustenance for a wide range of animals. This nutritional profile is particularly beneficial for pets such as reptiles, which require a diet high in protein to support their growth and overall health.

In terms of care, mealworms are relatively low maintenance. They prefer warm, dark environments and should be kept at temperatures between 21°C to 27°C however can last 2-3 weeks at around 10-12oC. A substrate that retains moisture, such as oats or wheat bran, should be provided to prevent dehydration. Additionally, mealworms require a moisture source, which can be provided through slices of fruits or vegetables, such as carrots or potatoes.
