Green tree monitors, Varanus prasinus, are strikingly vibrant lizards native to New Guinea and nearby islands. Recognised by their vivid green colouration, these arboreal reptiles are adept climbers, using their strong limbs and prehensile tails to navigate trees. Growing up to 3 feet in length, they primarily feed on insects, small mammals, and birds. Green tree monitors exhibit complex social behaviours and are known for their intelligence. In captivity, they require spacious, humid environments with ample climbing structures to thrive. Conservation efforts are essential as habitat destruction threatens their natural populations.
