Corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) are popular and beloved reptile pets, known for their vibrant colours, docile nature, and manageable size. Native to the southeastern United States, these non-venomous constrictors have become a staple in the pet trade. Corn snakes display a striking pattern of bold colours, often featuring vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows against a background of earthy browns or greys. With an average length of 3 to 5 feet, they are considered a manageable size for many reptile enthusiasts. Corn snakes are relatively easy to care for in captivity, requiring a secure and appropriately sized enclosure with a temperature gradient, a hiding spot, and a substrate such as aspen shavings. They are primarily fed a diet of mice or rats, with the frequency depending on their age and size. Due to their calm demeanour and ease of handling, corn snakes are an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced reptile keepers alike.

Despite being known for their docile nature, hatchling and young juvenile corn snakes are often found to be shy and defensive, often striking at anything. This can be resolved through gentle and regular handling. It is therefore important to not be deterred from handling them. Strikes from Corn Snakes this size are unlikely to hurt, even though it may look intimidating.
