King snakes, belonging to the genus Lampropeltis, are a diverse group of non-venomous constrictor snakes found primarily in North and Central America. Known for their striking patterns and varied colours, king snakes are popular among reptile enthusiasts as both pets and educational animals. These adaptable serpents inhabit a range of environments, from woodlands and grasslands to deserts. King snakes are efficient hunters, preying on a diet that often includes other snakes, rodents, and even reptile eggs. With a length averaging between 3 to 6 feet, depending on the species, they are generally manageable in size for captivity. King snakes exhibit a docile temperament, though individual behaviour can vary. When kept as pets, they require a secure enclosure with proper heating, a hiding spot, and a substrate like aspen shavings. Consistent feeding with appropriately sized prey items, routine veterinary care, and providing mental stimulation through environmental enrichment contribute to the overall well-being of king snakes in captivity. Their unique coloration and ease of care make them a popular choice for reptile enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Despite being known for their docile nature, hatchling and young juvenile snakes are often found to be shy and defensive, often striking at anything. This can be resolved though gentle and regular handling. It is therefore important to not be detered from handling them. Strikes from hatchling and juvenile snakes this size are unlikely to hurt, even though it may look intimidating.
