They are typically small to medium in size, averaging around 3 to 4 feet in length, though some individuals may grow slightly larger. Characterized by their slender, smooth bodies, they often feature a brown or greyish coloration with lighter, sometimes patterned markings along their backs and sides, which help them blend into their natural environment. African house snakes are primarily nocturnal, preying on small mammals, birds, lizards, and amphibians, often inhabiting areas close to human settlements, such as farms, homes, and villages, where they help control rodent populations. Their calm demeanour and adaptability to various environments make them popular in the pet trade.
