Giant African millipedes, members of the Archispirostreptus genus, are remarkable arthropods native to the forests of Central and West Africa. Known for their impressive size, some species can reach lengths of up to 15 inches. Despite their numerous legs, millipedes move slowly, grazing on decaying plant matter and detritus. Their cylindrical bodies are adorned with a hard exoskeleton, providing protection, and they release a defensive secretion containing chemicals that deter predators. Popular as pets due to their low-maintenance requirements, giant African millipedes play a vital role in nutrient cycling in their natural ecosystems, contributing to the decomposition of organic material.
