Alpine newts, Ichthyosaura alpestris, native to mountainous regions of Europe, are captivating amphibians celebrated for their intricate life cycle and striking appearance. During the breeding season, males showcase vibrant orange and blue hues, contrasting with the females' more subdued colors. Outside of the breeding period, both sexes adopt an olive-green hue with distinct black markings. These newts are well-adapted to cold environments, often inhabiting high-altitude ponds and lakes. Remarkably, alpine newts undergo a complex metamorphosis, transitioning from aquatic larvae to terrestrial juveniles before returning to aquatic habitats as adults. Their resilience and captivating aesthetics make them a fascinating subject for amphibian enthusiasts.
